Converting InstallShield Projects From One Version to Another

Most people are familiar with the fact that an older InstallShield project can be opened in a newer version of InstallShield. For example, if you have an InstallShield 2009 project, you can open in InstallShield 2010. You will be prompted that the project needs to be converted and that a backup will be made.

What most people don’t realize is that you can also go the other way. Let’s say you have an InstallShield 2009 project open in InstallShield 2009, and you would like for it to be converted back to the InstallShield 2008 format. You can do this by going to the File menu and doing a Save As. They you just select the project type from the list. You will see that the InstallShield 2008 and earlier project types are listed. Just pick the one you want and save it out.

Saving to an earlier format actually does work. I’ve tried it. However, if you have a project that has functionality that does not exist in the earlier version, then that functionality won’t magically be present in the earlier project. Never tried it, but that’s what I think would happen.

Note: With InstallShield 2010, you can no longer save to an earlier project format, such as 2009 or earlier. The explanation above applies to 2009 and earlier.
