Many people have asked me if I have any information regaring when InstallShield 2017 is going to be released. I have periodically checked and have not seen anything until this thread in the InstallShield forums. I don’t think the person who answered is an employee of InstallShield, so you can’t consider it an “official” answer. But, his answer is very interesting.
A post regarding future versions of InstallShield
If you can’t read the screenshot, here is the direct link: InstallShield 2017 or next version?
The answer is very interesting. Personally, I am not entralled with the cloud. But, a lot of people are crazy about it. I think Adobe moving totally to a cloud/subscription model was a mistake, but they are making a lot of money and don’t care what I think. In the end, I would be surprised if Windows desktop applications ever totally disappear, even though large software companies would love to handle everything for us and have us be totally dependent on their infrastructure (by forcing us to use terminals, not desktop computers). Besides, interfacing with devices (USB and otherwise) from the cloud is not a picnic.
Just so you know, I am not an official source of information on InstallShield. I have no relationship to InstallShield other than the fact that I have used their product for 25 years and think it’s the best platform out there.
My thinking is that a version of InstallShield for 2017 will not be coming out as it’s into December and almost 2018. I do think Flexera will have to update InstallShield sometime, just to keep maintenance contract holders happy and at a minimum, keep up with changes to Windows.
